The other annoying thing is that you
simply don't KNOW what it is you're going to be looking at until
you actually open it. The nature of the beast is that you have to
judge by a text header - that the poster put there - in order to
figure out if it's anything you want to look at. Of course, some
descriptions are lacking, and some are outright lies.
A good way to safeguard against this is to subscribe to a newsreader
service. I know, I know - you though this was all about free. Well,
it is - you can totally use regular newsfeeds for free. The subscription
services just take it up to another level of convenience.
Choosing A Subscription Service
The best one I've found by FAR is GUBA.com (Gigantic
Usenet Binaries Archive). This service not only gives you anonymous access
to the newsgroups, but it also weeds out all of the posts that are just ads
or have no content, and it also thumbnails each image to you can see
EXACTLY what you're going to be opening. If you have your newsreader set up,
then try this side by side comparison:
Quick Benefits Breakdown of a subscription service:
- Easy navigation of thousands of pics & movies
(everything's thumbnailed and labeled - so you know what you get before you
click it)
- Extremely fast internet connection
(since you use their connection you're not limited by your own download speed)
- Every Binaries newsgroup is represented
(You're not at the mercy of what your ISP chooses to carry).
- Spam Filtering
(dump the annoying ads and no-content messages... what a waste of time)
- Confidentiality
(What you choose to look at online is YOUR business, NOT your ISP's, not
anyone else's. Don't run the risk of being "tracked" online).
- Inexpensive
(it's cheaper than a paysite membership and you get guaranteed fresh pics
and movies every day).
